“The Zone of Interest” is an upcoming 2023 historical drama film, directed and written by Jonathan Glazer, and loosely inspired by Martin Amis’s 2014 novel of the same name. This international co-production involving the United States, the United Kingdom, and Poland delves into the life of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife as they attempt to create a life adjacent to the concentration camp.

The film, starring Sandra Hüller and Christian Friedel, premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in May 2023, where it garnered critical acclaim, securing both the Grand Prix and the FIPRESCI Prize. The United States release is scheduled for December 8, 2023, under A24. Additionally, it’s the chosen entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. The storyline revolves around Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig’s quest to establish a family home near the Auschwitz camp.

In the development of this project, Jonathan Glazer took inspiration from his visit to Auschwitz and spent two years immersed in research. He worked closely with the Auschwitz Museum and other organizations, obtaining special access to archives that contained survivor testimonies and accounts from individuals who had ties to the Höss household. Unlike the book it’s based on, Glazer used the real names of individuals involved to heighten authenticity.

The film’s unique cinematography, featuring embedded cameras on the set, allowed the actors to improvise, with violence being depicted subtly to avoid graphic visuals. Glazer officially announced the project in 2019, with A24, Film4 Productions, Access Entertainment, and House Productions co-financing and producing.
